Job Summary:

TargetX is looking for an experienced and motivated Data Engineer (ETL) to help build our next-generation products and solutions. As the company’s first officially titled Data Engineer, you would report directly to the VP of Engineering and be responsible for spearheading and executing all of our data engineering initiatives.

You must be comfortable and productive in a fast-paced development environment using Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum) while still being mindful and diligent about developing software tools and processes that are reliable, well-tested, well-designed, robust and maintainable.

We’re a product- and customer-focused team. As such, you must be comfortable with cross-functional teamwork, willing to collaborate with other teams across the organization and understand how to think about the tools and processes you’re developing beyond just their technical implementation details, but also how they impact our end-user products.

Required Skills & Experience (“Must Haves”):

  • 5+ years of overall software development experience
  • 3+ years focused on data engineering
  • 4+ years programming with Python or Java (Python strongly preferred)
  • 4+ years writing complex SQL queries
  • 3+ years building scalable and robust data processing and ETL pipelines
  • 3+ years building tools to fetch data from HTTP APIs (with rate limits) and file servers
  • 3+ years building tools to clean up, normalize, and transform data to and from various formats (e.g., XML, JSON, CSV)
  • 3+ years building tools to persist data into various storage systems (e.g., relational databases, columnar databases, graph databases, distributed file systems, AWS S3, etc.) and understanding which type of storage is best for each use case
  • 3+ years designing data models and managing data schemas and migration scripts
  • 2+ years building and evolving a “data lake”
  • 3+ years operating Linux systems using the command-line interface and tooling
  • 2+ years with Git, source code branching and pull requests
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Desired Skills & Experience (“Nice-to-Have”):

  • Prior experience with AWS Glue and AWS Redshift
  • Prior experience with Apache Spark
  • Prior experience with Python data engineering and analysis libraries (e.g., Singer.io, Pandas, SciPy, NumPy, PySpark, etc.)

  • 2+ years with JavaScript ES6+ and/or TypeScript
